A.C. McMillan African American Museum

The building in Emory has a number of exhibits and artifacts that detail the stories of the Reconstruction era in Texas, as well as Negro League baseball and Buffalo soldiers. The museum also includes a number of vintage U.S. postage stamps as well as a display of the Rosenwald Schools in the South. In fact, the museum is now in the midst of a fund-raising campaign to ultimately preserve and restore a vacated Rosenwald School building in the community.

The Annie Riggs Memorial Museum is open six days a week, and is located at the corner of Main and Callaghan (number 3 on the historical tour). Visitors can experience a thriving desert garden at the back of the museum, inviting benches on the wrap-around porches and an interior courtyard with a restored Pecos County buggy.

Located on the Republic of Texas Plaza, the living-history museum complex consists of two historic houses, the oldest existing one-room schoolhouse in Harris County, a replica barn that can be used for meetings and other activities. Physical office, gift shop and reference library not yet open to the public, will be housed on site in the 1898 house now being restored. All staff/docents are volunteer at this time.

Burton Heritage Society, The Burton Depot

We are working hard to have the Depot open to the public on Saturdays in 2008. We have started a complete inventory. We have quite a few items in the Museum and are now working on getting them labeled and improve upon our displays. It's really a constant struggle to maintain our membership rolls and encourage our members to continue volunteering. This Depot was a vital part of our community's heritage and we must continue to preserve and protect its future.

The Armstrong Browning Library is a research library devoted to the study of the lives and works of the Victorian poets, Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. It houses the world's largest collection of books, letters, manuscripts, and memorabilia pertaining to the Brownings, as well as a substantial collection of primary and secondary materials related to 19th-century literature and culture. Included in the latter category are works by literary figures who were contemporaries and associates of the Brownings, such as Matthew Arnold, Charles Dickens, George MacDonald, Joseph Milsand, and John Ruskin. Growing collections of 19th-century women poets and 19th-century theological pamphlets are among its newest avenues of expansion.

Agricultural Heritage Museum

The Agricultural Heritage Museum is located in Boerne City Park on over 5 acres. A blacksmith shop, woodworking shop, pioneer house, wagon house, main museum building and many outdoor exhibits showcase antique farm machinery and implements. Blacksmiths work on Saturdays and demonstrate their craft.

A tour of the three story 1860 Grist Mill and adjoining Art Museum lends a flavor to the history and essence of those pioneers who made this delightful valley their home. Summers captures the true movement west and his eye for details is known for its autenticity. Summers is a Texas artist whose works are coveted by collectors. Lovely antiques, period pieces and a variety of early Texas collections fill the rooms of the mill.

Bayless-Selby House

Brazos Valley African American Museum

More than fifty years ago, Mell Pruitt, currently a retired school teacher in Bryan began to collect and search out information on African Americans in the Brazos Valley. The small gathering of articles and photographs grew into an extensive collection about the history of African Americans in the Brazos Valley and beyond. In 1999 the African American National Heritage Society (AANHS) was founded in an effort to raise funds for the future construction of a museum to house the collection.

Buffalo Soldiers National Museum

BSNM is open to the public six days of the week (Monday through Saturday), conducting tours for the general public and area schools, in addition to providing education programming for middle to high school students. Among its many outreach programs, BSNM participates in parades, gives historical lectures, and sponsors a youth drill team. The museum is also an active participant in national veteran projects, such as the Veterans’ Registry Project.

C.S. Roberts House and Sherman Preservation League
Sherman, Texas

Although it was built in 1896, the C. S. Roberts House, an Eastlake style mansion, has changed very little over time. The dual gas/electric chandeliers, the seven gas fireplaces and other features such as pocekt doors and speaking tubes have never been modernized.Many items of furniture, such as the tall case clock on the stairs, have stood in the same position for over 100 years. Today, the historic house museum shows visitors the world of a middle class business owner and his family and servants in Texas in the years 1896 to the First World War. Our many special events and publications relate to the preservation and promotion of the understanding of the regions history and architecture.
