Description

Although it was built in 1896, the C. S. Roberts House, an Eastlake style mansion, has changed very little over time. The dual gas/electric chandeliers, the seven gas fireplaces and other features such as pocekt doors and speaking tubes have never been modernized. Many items of furniture, such as the tall case clock on the stairs, have stood in the same position for over 100 years. Today, the historic house museum shows visitors the world of a middle class business owner and his family and servants in Texas in the years 1896 to the First World War. Our many special events and publications relate to the preservation and promotion of the understanding of the regions history and architecture.

History

The Sherman Preservation League was founded over twenty-five years ago to preserve and promote the history and architecture of the region. The Annual Tour of Homes has been held every Spring for over twenty five years and the Autumn Awards Program has also been in place for over twenty-five years.

Artifact Collections

The Sherman Preservation League's primary artifact is the magnificent 1896 Eastlake mansion, the C. S. Roberts House. This fully furnished house contains superb examples of Eastlake style furniture and accessories as well as period collections of books, china, glassware, and family memorabilia.

Research Collections

The rennovated Servants' Quarters contains both exhibit space, an accessible bathroom for the physically challeneged, and a large research library on area architecture, history, and rennovation practices. The library is open to scholars by prior arrangement.

Programs

Docent program, lectures, home tours, slide shows; slide shows available for loan/tour; see above.
