Our museum is located in the cradle of Texas. Stephen F Austin, himself, named the town, and Jane Long operated a hotel/tavern here for the years when Texas was forming it's republic. It is located in the oldest public building in Brazoria.
We showcase our history from Karankawa Indian times to the present. We show more artifacts than signs, so you can actually see how things worked or looked. Our collection includes tools and guns that were used to build this area. There are vintage housewares, and business items from our town. We have a wonderful textile collection, especially quilts, and the equipment to make them all. We have an environmental room full of animals to delight the young and old alike. We have a lot of Civil war items and uniforms. Our Black history room showcases everything from slavery to local success stories. We have a military display celebrating our young heroes. We conduct tours for area school students as part of their curriculum. With just a phone call, you can add us to a day trip tour, you might be planning for your group or reunion.
Our mission is to preserve, protect, restore and rebuild historic properties in and adjacent to Brazoria for the benefit of current and future residents and tourists to learn of and enjoy our history.
Our museum began about 10 years ago in one room of our town's new library. We outgrew it very quickly, and when our sister group saved the old elementary school, it was a perfect fit to use the original building as a museum. With the new location and all the other activities which occupy the school grounds, our museum has grown and flourished.
We are presently filling our research library. It will soon be open for use by appointment.
