The Houston Municipal Airport Terminal is a beautiful and rare example of classic art deco airport architecture from the golden age of flight. The Terminal served Houston during the years when air travelers dressed in their finest and embarked for exotic destinations aboard roaring propliners like the Douglas DC-3 and the Lockheed Constellation.

The Houston Aeronautical Heritage Society is restoring the long-vacant Houston Municipal Airport Terminal for the City of Houston. As the restoration is completed in phases, the Houston Aeronautical Heritage Society is outfitting and operating the Terminal as the 1940 Air Terminal Museum, an interactive museum showcasing the role and importance of civil aviation since the dawn of manned flight.

The Brazoria County Historical Museum is housed in the 1897 Brazoria County Courthouse. In the late 1970s, the courthouse was slated for destruction. With widespread community support, the Brazoria County Historical Commission petitioned the Commissioners Court to save the structure and utilize it as a museum. On March 26, 1979, County Judge E.E. Brewer signed an agreement with the Commission, leasing the courthouse to the Commission for 100 years. Its terms required the Commission to renovate the facility without county funding and open it to the public within two years. The lease was later assigned to the Brazoria County Historical Museum, Inc., a not-for profit corporation. The move was made to improve the museum's fund-raising capabilities.

Bryan, Texas

More than fifty years ago, Mell Pruitt, currently a retired school teacher in Bryan began to collect and search out information on African Americans in the Brazos Valley. The small gathering of articles and photographs grew into an extensive collection about the history of African Americans in the Brazos Valley and beyond. In 1999 the African American National Heritage Society (AANHS) was founded in an effort to raise funds for the future construction of a museum to house the collection.

In December 1993, J. P. and Mary Jon Bryan created the Bryan Texana Foundation as a non-profit corporation to operate a museum devoted to Texas history. The Bryans have long been advocates of Texas historical and preservation efforts.

A relative of Stephen F. Austin and sixth-generation Texan, J.P. Bryan has served as president of the Texas State Historical Association, president and chairman of the Texas Historical Foundation, chairman on the Development/Advisory Board for the Institute of Texas Cultures, trustee for the Nita Stewart Haley Memorial Library and commissioner for the Texas Historical Commission.

BSNM is open to the public six days of the week (Monday through Saturday), conducting tours for the general public and area schools, in addition to providing education programming for middle to high school students. Among its many outreach programs, BSNM participates in parades, gives historical lectures, and sponsors a youth drill team. The Center's research collections date back to the opening of The University of Texas in 1883. As the University's holdings in Texas history grew, scholars urged their consolidation and special housing. In 1945, University regents created the Eugene C. Barker Texas History Center. In 1991, the Barker became a component of the newly created Center for American History (CAH), a special collections library, archive, and museum that supports research, teaching, and other activities related to the history of the U. S. The CAH is comprised of the Research and Collections Division at UT in Austin, the Sam Rayburn Library and Museum in Bonham and the Winedale near Round Top.

The Armstrong Browning Library is a research library devoted to the study of the lives and works of the Victorian poets, Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. It houses the world's largest collection of books, letters, manuscripts, and memorabilia pertaining to the Brownings, as well as a substantial collection of primary and secondary materials related to 19th-century literature and culture. Included in the latter category are works by literary figures who were contemporaries and associates of the Brownings, such as Matthew Arnold, Charles Dickens, George MacDonald, Joseph Milsand, and John Ruskin. Growing collections of 19th-century women poets and 19th-century theological pamphlets are among its newest avenues of expansion.
