Cannonball House Museum
Macon, Georgia

History, Historic House, Historical Society, Library, Military, Science

At Cannonball House we strive to educate, promote and develop public interest in the cultural, architectural and historical heritage of the community. The house is a beautiful example of Greek Revival Architecture. In 1864, the house was struck by a Union Army artillery shell, damaging the front and an interior wall. It was the only residential property in Macon damaged during the battle of Dunlap's Farm. We have a large collection of military artifacts in our museum and the house is furnished as it would have been in the 1860's, many of the pieces orginal to the house. We offer wonderful weekend events to explore life in the 19th century, such as yarn dyeing and spinning, candle making, pottery and music.

Sidney Lanier Cottage House Museum
Macon, Georgia

Culture, General, History, Historic House, Library

The Sidney Lanier Cottage House Museum, located at 935 High Street in Macon, GA, is the birthplace of noted poet, musician & soldier, Sidney Lanier (1842-1881). Perhaps best known for his poems "The Marshes of Glynn" and "Song of the Chattahoochee," Lanier was also a renowned musician, as he was first chair flute in the Peabody Symphony Orchestra in Baltimore for seven seasons. Furthermore, Lanier received a federal commission to compose a Cantata for the Centenniel celebration of the United States in 1876 in Philadelphia. Please join us for a guided tour of the museum, where you will learn more about Sidney Lanier and view items from his life.

Historic Macon Foundation
Macon, Georgia

Culture, General, History, Historic House, Historical Society

Historic Macon Foundation enacts the priorities of preservation-minded volunteers in our community. We provide our members with up-to-date, complete and accurate information about economic development, smart growth and historic preservation so that we can work together with our political leaders to revitalize our beautiful city. To accomplish this goal, we regularly call on our members to advocate for the historic places they love (like Atlantic Cotton Mills and the historic Bibb County Courthouse). We provide the tools and advice that makes the most of your interests in these projects. In addition, we work to reviatlize entire working-class neighborhoods: saving the homes, preserving tolerant mixes of income levels and culture, eliminating crime and increasing homeownership.
