Description

At Cannonball House we strive to educate, promote and develop public interest in the cultural, architectural and historical heritage of the community. The house is a beautiful example of Greek Revival Architecture. In 1864, the house was struck by a Union Army artillery shell, damaging the front and an interior wall. It was the only residential property in Macon damaged during the battle of Dunlap's Farm. We have a large collection of military artifacts in our museum and the house is furnished as it would have been in the 1860's, many of the pieces orginal to the house. We offer wonderful weekend events to explore life in the 19th century, such as yarn dyeing and spinning, candle making, pottery and music. We also offer lectures that give insight into the history of Macon, Georgia, the War Between the States, local authors and music/art appreciation.

Mission

Artifact Collections

Artifacts include furnishings both original to the home and others donated by Macon area families to reflect an accurate 1860's period home. Our military museum contains uniforms, weaponry, manufacturing items, Confederate money, family letters and photos. The collection is rotated occasionally to showcase a special event or to display other pieces in our collection.

Educational Programs

We currently participate in several educational programs for students and teachers in our area. We also have docents who make trips to schools to demonstrate life in the 19th century. Last year we re-enacted a Civil War hospital and gave demonstrations to our visitors.

Publications

We have a quarterly newsletter that is mailed to members of Friends of Cannonball House Inc. Quarterly board meetings discuss ongoing operations and upcoming events.
