Rockbridge Historical Society

The Rockbridge Historical Society is a repository for much of the history of Rockbridge County and Lexington. Historical resources, artifacts, and many publications and papers are available for use by historians or anyone who is researching the history or people of this area.

Rippon Lodge Historic Site
Woodbridge, Virginia

Rippon Lodge was built circa 1747 by Richard Blackburn and is one of the oldest houses still standing in Prince William County. This modest house was built on a hilltop overlooking the mouth of Neabsco Creek and the Potomac River and was surrounded by several other structures during the 18th century. In the early 20th century the home under went extensive renovations by its then owner Judge Wade Ellis and his wife Dessie. Stewardship of the home then passed to its last private owner Admiral Richard Blackburn Black in 1953. Prince William County purchased the property in 2000 and began extensive restoration efforts.

Russell County Historical Society

Russell County was formed in 1786 out of Washington County. Formed out of Russell County in whole or in part were Buchanan, Dickenson, Lee, Scott, Tazewell, and Wise Counties. The Russell County Courthouse burned in 1872; the loss of one deed book and one marriage book are attributed to this fire. The Local History Room at the Lebanon Library has an extensive collection containing local history and authors as well as extensive genealogical material. There is also a small local history collection available at the Honaker Library.
