the latter part of his life, Charles Brown III developed a passion for collecting old, rare automatic musical instruments. That collection is now part of the Bayernhof Museum. His collection is displayed in almost every room in the house. There are many antique music boxes, “monkey” organs, a Wurlitzer carousel organ, a Reproduco Piano-Pipe organ used in funeral homes and theaters, an Encore Automatic Banjo. There is also a Mills Deluxe Violano Virtuoso player violin and piano combination, a Knabe Ampico reproducing grand piano that faithfully “reproduces” the playing of the artist who originally recorded the roll and a huge Seeburg Pipe Organ Orchestra that was once used to accompany silent films to name just a few.

In 2007, the museum completed the largest expansion in its history with the opening of Dinosaurs in Their Time, the finest dinosaur experience in the country. In addition to more than 20 galleries and the Powdermill Nature Reserve research field station, Carnegie Museum of Natural History maintains, preserves, and interprets an extraordinary collection of 21 million objects and scientific specimens; so many that less than one percent are on view at any given time. These collections are used by educators, scientists, researchers, and museums worldwide to broaden understanding of evolution, conservation, and biodiversity.

Only ten miles from the last large locomotive builder in North America is the collection of the Lake Shore Railway Historical Society. That collection includes not only rare railroad pieces built by the men of woman of Erie, General Electric, it also includes a half a dozen unmodified Pullman railroad passneger cars, some dating back to the early twentieth century. Standing on the platform in front of the 1899 railroad depot that your relative might have once departed from, you can watch modern rail traffic go screaming by.

The Museum collection is international in scope and covers a wide variety of clocks, watches, tools, and other time-related items. The largest collection is of nineteenth-century American clocks and watches. However, additional collections include early English tallcase clocks, Asian timepieces from Japan and China, and timekeeping devices from Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Russia. Chronologically, the exhibits take you on a tour through the entire history of timekeeping technology from early non-mechanical devices to today's atomic and radio- controlled clocks.

Briar Bush grounds feature over a mile of trails winding through a variety of natural habitats. Native plants and wild animals can be found here year round, especially at the Bird Observatory. The George Westinghouse Museum provides a retreat into early 19th century Wilmerding where George Westinghouse lived and worked. The museum features Westinghouse's life and career by documenting his accomplishments and focusing on his many inventions. The Museum in his honor is not only a tribute to George Westinghouse, one of the world's foremost inventors and entrepreneurs, it is likewise a tribute to the thousands of men and women who have worked for the Westinghouse companies over the years, and whose achievements have made the lives of people everywhere safer, easier and more pleasant.

More than 13,000 labeled plants of over 2,500 types are growing in the Arboretum’s living collection. These include representatives of the temperate floras of North America, Asia, and Europe. This historic collection traces its foundation to John Morris’s interest in plants from around the world, and includes plants collected in China by E.H. Wilson at the turn of the century. Many of the Delaware Valley’s "trees-of-record" (the largest of their kind) are found in the Arboretum. Most notable are the katsura, Engler beech, Bender oak, and trident maple.

The No. 9 Coal mine was opened in 1855, but its origin traces back ten years earlier. A large anthracite coal deposit called Mammoth Vein was the focus for most mining in the Lehigh Valley. Major mine systems in the Summit Hill area produced a great deal of coal from the Vein. Unfortunately, the quarry had to be abandoned due to flooding. Mining companies decided to attempt another drilling into Mammoth Vein. Between the years of 1853 and 1856, these attempts met with many difficulties, including cost. Finally, in December of 1857, the No. 9 coal mine had been driven far enough to encounter coal. The next month, the mine was contracted to produce 90,000 tons of coal per year.

Widener University has acquired the Taylor Memorial Arboretum, a 30-acre reserve of plantings and natural lands located about a mile north of the university in Nether Providence Township. The arboretum will remain free and open to the public while providing the university with greatly expanded opportunities for research and hands-on learning in the environmental and biological sciences and science education.

Over the years, the museum has greatly expanded its collections and modernized its public offerings to serve the needs of succeeding generations of Pennsylvanians. Originally located next to the Capitol, the museum moved to its current location in 1964.
