Ada Historical Society

The Ada Historical Society was first formed in 1974 by a group of local women interested in the history of Ada and strived to preserve Ada's rich historical roots. After a few years, the group disbanded. Then in the spring of 1989, the Ada historical was reorganized and they have continued to grow since. For several years the group met in the Ada Township Hall. Their goal was to have a museum in the Village. After years of hard work, along with the generosity of Frank Averill and Floyd Chaffee and others who donated money, labor, and artifacts, the Averill Historical Museum of Ada opened on August 14, 1999.

Benzie Area Historical Society and Museum

Our mission is to inspire people to explore the past! The Benzie Area Historical Society seeks to educate and entertain the public about Benzie County and many of communities that boarder it, through exhibits at the museum and programs held throughout the area. The Benzie Area Historical Society and Museum celebrate the people, industries, and organizations that made Benzie County's History and Heritage an important factor in Northwest Michigan. The BAHS Museum is housed in a 1887 built Congregational Church building in Benzonia and is listed on the Michigan State Register of Historic Sites.

BRADLEY HOME MUSEUM AND CARRIAGE HOUSE

Experience authentic Victorian Gothic architecture with these two beautifully restored buildings. The 1874 Bradley Home is a hands-on historic house museum where you can enjoy a glimpse of the everyday life of an early Midland family. The Carriage House features an amazing collection of horse-drawn carriages and sleighs, and is home to mid-Michigan’s largest functioning blacksmith’s shop.

In 1928, the leaders of the Detroit Historical Society founded the Detroit Historical Museum and for the next 20 years the Society operated the Museum and preserved our region’s rich history through the collection and conservation of artifacts. In 1945, the Society transferred ownership of the Museum and the collections to the City of Detroit, and the Society focused on fundraising and marketing activities for the Detroit Historical Museum and, later, the Dossin Great Lakes Museum.

Edwardsburg Area Museum
Edwardsburg, Michigan

This historical museum is housed in two houses that were once part of a hotel. The houses are joined. A third connecting house burned in the 1980s, and was reconstructed and dedicated in 2006. The exhibits typify the history of the area and include several collections. There is a main gallery, the original house, and a schoolroom with historical artifacts from Edwardsburg Public School alumni.

Engadine Historical Society

The museum reflects life in the community dating back to 1894, focusing on the lumbering and the agricultural eras. Featured displays include an 1895 restored and furnished log house, period furniture, replica of a one room school house, military artifacts, Country Bank vault, and objects from the cooperage mill, which was the communities largest employer at the time.

The park is a unique mix of state-of-the-art archival and multi-purpose facilities, in a pleasant campus setting close to downtown Midland and the Pere Marquette Rail Trail. Heritage Park includes the Herbert D. Doan Midland County History Center, the Herbert H. Dow Historical Museum, and the 1874 Bradley Home Museum and Carriage House.

Arenac County Historical Society

Arenac County is situated along the Saginaw Bay of Lake Huron in the Great Lakes. It is rich in Indian history because of its abundance of hard chert and flint for arrowheads. It is rich in logging history as a part of the logging industry developed around Michigan's white pine and hardwoods as well as being a conduit to the lake for shipping the lumber produced here. The County also was the location of a 19th century summer resort hotel to which customers arrived by ship. Its history was gradually reshaped due to the disastrous wildfires that eventually destroyed the logging business in the area.

The Birmingham Historical Museum features the 1822 John West Hunter House and the 1928 Allen House. These historic buildings sit side-by-side in the beautiful John West Hunter Historic Park near downtown.

Mission
The mission of the museum, which opened in May 2001, is to preserve, protect and promote the community's unique heritage. A primary focus of the Museum is to expand educational programs for area schools.

A glimpse of life in Birmingham's pioneering years comes to life when visitors step inside and stroll through the furnished rooms of the 1822 John West Hunter House. The period of 1820-1880's is well represented by the house's furnishings.

Cheboygan County Museum Complex

All of the efforts of the society are centered on helping our citizens appreciate and learn from our history so we can build a great present and future for ourselves and descendants.

We have lots of community activities - some of them at the museum, some at other locations. Right now, we are working with our local garden club to create a Victorian planting to complement our Sheriff's Residence and Jail. Our historic log cabin will be outfitted with historically appropriate displays by Log Cabin Day in June 2006.

In 2005, we had the historically certified Sheriff's Residence tuckpointed to preserve the original brick walls.

Elk Rapids Area Historical Museum

The mission of the Elk Rapids Area Historical Society, a non-profit organization, is to assemble, preserve, protect, and exhibit in the Elk Rapids Area Historical Museum, collections pertaining to the history of the village, its people, and community life. Our focus is especially on Elk Rapids’ role in the 19th and 20th centuries as an important lumbering and related industries, cement, chemical and pig iron smelting center, strategically located on the convergence of Elk River and Grand Traverse Bay. As a research and educational institution, we plan to be both an active participant in the historical and cultural tourism focus of Elk Rapids and a focal point for students of all ages to participate in historical studies and activities of the Elk Rapids and Chain of Lakes Region.
