African American Research Library and Cultural Center

This 60,000-square-foot facility, built in the heart of one of Broward’s historically black communities, is the third of its kind in the nation to house extensive collections related to this unique blend of cultures. It is the sixth largest branch library of the Broward County Libraries Division, a service of the Broward County Board of County Commissioners. The library houses more than 85,000 books, manuscripts, artifacts and documents. In addition to these resources, it features permanent and traveling exhibits, a 300-seat state-of-the-art auditorium and a computer training lab.

The Art & History Museums, Maitland operates the Maitland Art Center, Waterhouse Residence Museum, Carpentry Shop Museum, Telephone Museum, and Maitland Historical Museum. The Maitland Art Center was founded as an artist colony in 1937 by Jules Andre Smith and has grown into a cultural hub for Central Florida. The Maitland Art Center offers art instruction, exhibits, and public programming in an unequaled architectural environment. The Waterhouse Residence Museum offers a glimpse into Florida Victorian life as docents guide visitors through the home of one of Maitland’s founding families, the Waterhouses.

Visit the Carrabelle History Museum located in the Old City Hall Building at 106 Avenue B, SE, ( behind the BP station on US 98). The museum is located in the Old Carrabelle City Hall built in 1933 as project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) by local mason Marvin Justiss. The museum has 4 rooms to display its collections. a workroom/office for the volunteers to process the incoming artifacts and a nice long hallway for special displays.

Cpl. Larry E. Smedley National Vietnam War Museum

The museum is named in honor of Cpl. Larry Eugene Smedley, who was born on March 4, 1949 in Front Royal Virginia. He attended Howard Junior High School in Union Park, Florida, leaving in 1964.He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on March 18, 1966 in Orlando, Florida. In July 1967, LCpl. Smedley arrived in the Republic of Vietnam. He was assigned duty as a rifleman and squad radio man with Company D, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, and was promoted to Corporal on September 1, 1967. On December 21, 1967 Cpl. Smedley was killed action in Quang Nam Province and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously.

Initially opened only during Floral City Heritage Days (annually on the first Saturday of December and preceding Friday night), Heritage Hall was redesigned in 2009 and opened weekly every Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Air Force Space and Missile Museum

The physical location of the museum is not related to the mailing address. Mapping programs will not display actual location of the museum. The 45th Space Wing Public Affairs Office hosts a free historic bus tour for the general public the second Wednesday of each month. The three-hour tour includes visits to the Air Force Space and Missile Museum, historic launch pads and the historic Cape Canaveral Lighthouse. The tour begins at 9:00 AM at the south gate of Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Participants must meet directly across the street from the Pass & ID building no later than 8:45 AM. Call the 45th Space Wing Public Affairs Office at 321-494-5949 for information and reservations.

The Archer Historical Society's newly developed plan for the Yulee Railroad Day's Celebration, is to coordinate concurrent linear events in all of the towns along the original Florida Railroad's right-of-way, connected by runs, relays, parades etc. Initially it is planned to extend accross all of Alachua County celebrating the 150th anniversary of Yulee's visionary railroad which was chartered in 1853 and crossed Florida in the next 6 years. The event is expected to grow each year, with new events and locations being added until the event extends accross the state, coast to coast, from Fernandina Beach to Cedar Key Florida. We will be having a 150 year anniversary every year for the next 8 years until we mark the date 150 years after it was completed at Cedar Key.

Cracker Trail Museum

Since its beginning in 1967, Cracker Trail Museum has collected over 4,000 items related to pioneer-era Florida history. Each item is maintained either within glass enclosed cases or strategically placed around the floor of the museum. Many of the larger items are provided in a setting that would be reminiscent of pioneer living. The items are identified with a tag that not only gives its description, but includes the name of the person who donated it. Proper records are maintained, so at any time, a guest may inquire about a certain item donated by a family member and its location can be retrieved through its computer data base. This procedure is used many times within the course of a month to assist family members for viewing a loved one’s acquisition.
