John and Sylvia Crowley were area homesteaders from Pennsylvania who purchased a 185 acre homestead in Old Miakka, Florida. Sylvia was a schoolteacher and John was a blacksmith and ran a General Store on the Pine Level Trail to the county seat in Manatee. Grandson Jasper Crowley inherited this land. In 1933, Japer Crowley taught in a one room schoolhouse. He would later become principal of Fruitville Elementary school. He also started the first Florida FFA chapter. Jasper brought juvenile delinquents to Crowley to reconnect to the land and to the source of their food. He formed a non profit and donated the land at the top of the "Bone Valley" Myakka watershed to continue to educate, preserve the land, and to honor our heritage.
