To choose violence and conflict is easy. Pick up a gun. Drop a bomb. Ignore the rights of others. To choose peace is more difficult. The arsenal of peace has no weapons but nonviolence, compassion, faith, and reason.

If peace is to be a viable alternative in a world inundated with violence, the message of peace must have constant presence. It needs to be available to those who would choose and work for peace, but who often feel alone or defeated. It needs to be a message heard over and over by children. It needs to be incorporated into everyday activities. Its promise needs to resonate in the streets.

To achieve its lofty goals, peace needs to be grounded.

Founded in 1962, the Kettering Moraine Museum and Historical Society was dedicated to the organization, collection and preservation of historical artifacts and memorabilia from the Kettering and Moraine areas. In addition to the artifacts, historic buildings have been donated and moved to the Museum site over the years. Originally the museum was managed by a dedicated director and an active group of volunteers and was open to the public on a regular schedule. Due to health issues of the director and declining Society membership, the Museum Society was disbanded in 2008.

The National Aviation Hall of Fame opened the doors to its permanent home to the public January 8, 2003. Founded in 1962 and chartered by congress in 1964 the Hall of Fame honors America's air and space pioneers. A cast of dignitaries and Hall of Fame enshrinees turned out, including Astronaut Joe Engle, 2001 enshrinee, test pilot Joe Kittinger, 1997 hall of famer, and test pilot Scott Crossfield, a 1983 honoree. Zoe Dell Nutter, co-chair of the NAHF Board of Nomations, who with her late husband, Ervin, founded the hall's endowment, gave a brief speech and helped snip the ribbon. The NAHF is adjacent to the U.S. Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio.

This Italianate turn-of-the-century structure was the final home of the poet Paul Laurence Dunbar. It exhibits his literary treasures, many of his personal items and his family's furnishings. During his short lifetime Dunbar became known as the poet laureate of African Americans. Drawing on his observations of society and the experience of his parents--both former slaves--he gave voice to the social dilemma of disenfranchised people of his day and became a proclaimer of black dignity.

Historical Society

In 2005, Carillon Historical Park merged with the Montgomery County Historical Society to create a new umbrella organization known as Dayton History. The private non-profit (501c3) organization was established to preserve, share, and celebrate our region’s history. Carillon Historical Park is home to over 30 historic structures and cares for over three million artifacts.

2025 Am Assoc for State and Local History Annual Conference

TBD

Cincinnati, Ohio

The 2025 AASLH Annual Conference, in partnership with Ohio Local History Alliance, will take place as the history field makes the final preparations to kickoff off the 250th commemoration of the founding of the United States.

The 2025 conference theme, inspired by AASLH’s Making History at 250: The Field Guide for Semiquincentennial, is an opportunity to broadly explore one of the guide’s themes, The American Experiment. For many in the American colonies in 1776, independence from Britain represented a “leap into the dark” into an unknown future

We are excited for you to join us in Cincinnati as we encourage discussion about our democracy and civic institutions and how they can help strengthen understanding, inspire action, and reveal ways that all of us can participate in and shape the ongoing American experiment.

For more information, please call 615-320-3203 or email info@aaslh.org.
