Description

The Amherst History Museum is an amusement park for the History buff. The museum exhibits most of its collection in its gallery and period rooms. Its current exhibition, "Emily Dickinson's Amherst," features the poet's white dress and tells the story of Amherst through 19th century photographs and objects. The 1750 ca. Strong House represents the many eras of New England. Knowledgeable tour guides lead visitors through the period rooms.

History

Amherst Historical Society is the olded Hisotrical Society in the Pioneer Valley. The house was donated to the Society in the 1900's after the death of Mrs. Emerson and house has represents that time period.

Artifact Collections

Collection dates back to the early 1700's and the society still collects objects of revelance to the town's hisotry.

Research Collections

Most of the paper and photograph collection is housed at the next door Jones Library. The Museum has some out of print history books, independent research papers, photos, and family history information at the museum.

Educational Programs

We offer many programs through out the year. We are the sponosor of the Conch Shell Award, this award honors a local person, business, or organization that has contributed significantly to the preservation of the town's history. We also collaborate with other institutions such as the Emily Dickinson Museum in educational programs and conduct school tours on a regular basis. We have a lectures and workshops through out the year. Fees depend on the event.

Governance

The Society was founded in 1899 and the Board of Trustees comprises 18 members including the Executive Committee.
