Description

Homestead, Dye House and Gardens, featuring fiber arts of the 1800's, and an extensive genealogical library.

Mission

The Society works to promote awareness and understanding of the sociological, economic, political, cultural, and natural history of the area known as the Town of North Stonington.

History

The Society was founded in 1970 to perpetuate the history of the Town, to encourage the study of the history of the town and to preserve manuscript material and relics relating to that History.

The Society encourages identification and responsible stewardship of historical sites and structures, including houses, cemeteries, old roads, and stonewalls. It provides advice for town government, organizations, and individuals interested in historic preservation, most recently helping the affordable housing committee in its acquisition of an old schoolhouse, and helping the town to gain recognition and maintain the recently acquired Gallup House.

Permanent Exhibitions

The Homestead exhibits furniture, handicrafts, cameras, and musical instruments in addition to its genealogical Library, Dye House and Gardens.

History offers many lessons of sustainable land care. We created The Homestead Project to share those lessons with you through hands on workshops, gardening and herbal crafts!

The Dye House features exhibitions of silk, indigo and our famous plaids!
