Description

The Sedro-Woolley Museum is dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of Sedro-Woolley, Skagit County, and beyond. We receive visitors from all over the county and state--and from all over the world. We're proud of our extensive collection, donated by the community and cared for by our friendly volunteers. Spend an hour or two browsing the exhibits. Conduct research in our library. Attend our special events. What you find will surprise you!

History

The Sedro-Woolley Museum Committee was formed in December of 1991. In 1992, our articles of incorporation were finalized and we became an official non-profit organization. The City of Sedro-Woolley gave us a 25 year lease on the former "Murdock Mall" building. The building originally was Emil Jeck’s Ford Garage, built in the 1920’s. The inside of the building had badly deteriorated due to a leaking roof and with a generous donation from the Soroptimists we replaced the ceiling.

Artifact Collections

Step into another time. Immerse yourself in the olden days--the days of logging and mining, company towns, the war years. Learn the history of our first hospitals in private homes. Learn of Northern State Hospital. Spend some time with the pioneers of the Skagit Valley. Walk down historic main street--the bank, the mercantile, the saloon, the jail. Visit the classic cars and the model railroad. Stop by the farm and the smithy. Remember the events. Get close to the history. Find your ancestors here. Find yourself here. We'll see you soon!

Research Collections

The Museum Research Library is open during business hours for research on Central Skagit County history. Many items are available to browse, including books, newspapers dating back to the early 1900s, Sedro-Woolley school yearbooks, Northern State Hospital News, and assembled collections on the lumber industry and logging, churches, businesses, schools, family histories, the Loggerodeo, and many more research topics. Several guides to collections are available and more continue to be added to assist researchers.

Collections include photographs, archival records, correspondence, maps, atlases, books, and other items. Guides are available for a few larger collections, including newspapers, Northern State Hospital, Kimberley-Clark and predecessor lumber industry companies, School District 101, and Skagit Steel (in progress).
