The Lansdale Historical Society operates from a two-building complex at 137-141 Jenkins Ave. One of the buildings - the Jenkins Homestead - is a Federalist style house that dates to 1770. The land was owned by the Jenkins family as far back as 1743. At one time the farmstead encompassed more than 120 acres - a tract larger than the Borough of Lansdale. The homestead was acquired by the borough in 1972 and has been maintained by the society since then.
The Lansdale Historical Research Center is located in adjoining building less than 50 feet from the Jenkins Homestead. The research center is currently under construction with an anticiated opening date of March 1, 2004.
The research center will be fully computerized and will include 133 years of The Reporter newspaper, more than 20,000 postcards, slides, photos and negatives of Lansdale through the years. The newspaper collection predates the incorporation of the borough by two years. The collection also includes, high school yearbooks, family genealogies, municipal histories for Lansdale and many surrounding communities, maps, deeds, tax records, etc.
