Description

Graeme Park, a 42-acre estate, is home to the Keith House, the former residence of Pennsylvania colonial Governor, Sir William Keith, as well as a reconstructed summer kitchen and 19th century barn. The site features a nature trail and picnicing facilities and offers regular house tours. Many special events throughout the year bring local and colonial history alive to visitors and a special emphasis is placed on the lives and personal histories of the former residents of Graeme Park.

History

The Keith House at Graeme Park is the only surviving residence of a Pennsylvania colonial Governor. It was constructed around 1722 by Sir William Keith and modified around 1750 by his son-in-law Dr. Thomas Graeme, who installed the fine Georgian paneling which visitors can see today. Dr. Graeme's daughter, Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson, was an accomplished author and poet who contributed much to the arts and colonial society with her salon-like "Attic Evenings." Later owners of Graeme Park ensured its preservation and much of the original fabric of the house is still intact. The property was donated to the state of Pennsylvania and currently administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.
