Description

An 1840's restored manor house with exquisite Greek Revival architecture. Earlier wing has working cooking fireplace. Educational programs for young people a main focus. Also varying programs for adults. History focuses on John Fitch, steamboat inventor, Revolutionary War battle of Crooked Billet crossed this farm in 1778. Also William Tenent,founder of the Log College.

History

Founded in 1977 as the Citizens for the Preservation of Craven Hall to save the building from demolition. Over its history, the house has been used as a home, multi-tenant dewelling, school and school administration offices. The house is a grand example of Federal/Greek Revival architecture with 95% of 1840's interior decoration in tact. Name changed to the Craven Hall Historical Society, Inc.in 1993 when acquired from the then owner.

Artifact Collections

Miscellaneous items from the local area including tools,flax wheel, walking wheel,rope bed, wash stand and dresser. Parlor set of early victorian furniture including a settee, rocker and straight chair - all upolstered. Cooking fireplace includes many period utensils.

Educational Programs

House tours offered every month on 2nd Sunday from 12:00 noon till 3:00PM
Educational slide programs available on request including "Warminster- Past and Present" - "The Life and Times of John Fitch, (steamboat inventor); "The Battle of Crooked Billet" and "Recollections of a Restoration" - the story of the Craven Hall restoration.
Colonial cooking demonstrations are also available on request.
There are no fees for these programs but donations are appreciated.
