Description

Climb to the top of the 1860 Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse - a great tour destination and the best view in Palm Beach County. A history Museum in a renovated WWII building exhibits "Five Thousand Years on the Loxahatchee," featuring Native American, Seminole, European Contact, Pioneer, Lighthouse and Military history, including a lighthouse video and Museum Gift Shop. Exterior exhibits include the 1892 Tindall Pioneer Homestead, Seminole Chickee & Kiosks, Keeper's Workshop as well as the Lighthouse and Oil House exhibit. The historic Lighthouse is the centerpiece of the federally designated Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area, one of only three in the entire country.

Mission

As Stewards of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse & Museum, the Loxahatchee River Historical Society preserves and interprets the dynamic heritage, ancient cultural history and sensitive natural systems of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstandins Natural Area and the Loxahatchee River Region in southeast Florida.

History

The Loxahatchee River Historical Society, incorporated in 1972, has stewarded and preserved the unique history of northern Palm Beach County, the Loxahatchee River region and the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse for over 43 years. As managers of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse the Society was responsible for its protection and restoration and for the interpretation of the site, from Native American habitation dating back at least 5,000 years to modern military occupation. Sitting at the juncture of the Loxahatchee River, the Indian River and the Jupiter Inlet, the Society spearheaded efforts to have this 120 acre Lighthouse site designated the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area by Congress in 2008 as part of the National Consesrvation Lands. The Society provides guided tours to over 80,000 visitors, residents and students annually.

Artifact Collections

The Society collections include Florida prehistoric, Spanish contact, pioneer and military artifacts, textiles, documents, photographs, maps and furniture. Significant collections include the Bessie DuBois,John Durham and Jupiter Lifesvaing Station collections.
