Description

The Jewish Museum is the preeminent United States institution exploring the intersection of 4,000 years of art and Jewish culture. It is widely admired for its exhibitions and educational programs that inspire people of all backgrounds. The Jewish Museum hosts a wide range of family and cultural programs, including concerts, lectures and the annual New York Jewish Film Festival.

History

The Jewish Museum was established on January 20, 1904 when Judge Mayer Sulzberger donated 26 ceremonial art objects to The Jewish Theological Seminary of America as the core of a museum collection. Today, The Jewish Museum maintains an important collection of 26,000 objects – paintings, sculpture, works on paper, photographs, archaeological artifacts, ceremonial objects, and broadcast media.

Educational Programs

The Jewish Museum offers exhibitions, concerts, lectures, film screenings and hosts the annual New York Jewish Film Festival. There are free (with admission) art workshops for children and families and docent-led tours of exhibitions. The Museum also offers tours for visitors with special needs, including those who are blind or visually impaired, deaf or hard of hearing and those who have mobility impairments. For students and educators, there are school tours, art classes, a high school video workshop and a teen intern program. There are also tours students with special needs.
