The Historical Society, Inc., a private not-for-profit organization founded in 1889, is dedicated to the study and appreciation of all aspects of the history of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, through educational programs, research, archeological projects, preservation advocacy and the collection and preservation of fine arts, decorative arts, archeological objects, printed and manuscript materials and maps, costumes and weaponry, and historic artifacts related to the heritage of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow.
The major operation units of the Society are: the Jacob Odell landmark house, the museum collections, library (including maps and photographs), archeological workshop, public programs, publications, administrative services and historical architectural preservation programs.
The audience served by the Society's programs includes residents, school and college students and visitors to the community, businesses and governmental agencies in the area, members of the Society, scholars of the history and pre-history of the community, scholars of American history, art historians and the general public.
Founded in 1889, the Historical Society continues its programs in the historical Jacob Odell house located at One Grove Street in the heart of the historic district.
Collections Include:
Louis A. Brennan Archaeological Laboratory: Arifacts from the six-year archeological dig of the REQUA tenant farmstead (c. 1720-1855)
Captors' Exhibit: Comprehensive display of research materials, art, and artifacts pertaining to the capture of Major Andre by the local militia men,
John Paulding, Isaac Van Wart and David Williams.
Costumes: Clothing, jewelry, fans, hats, etc. associated with local families from the 19th and 20th centuries
Military Memorabilia: Firearms and other artifacts from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars as well as World Wars I & II
Regional: Domestic, educational and commercial objects relating to the history of the Tarrytown.
Children: Dolls, games, toys and miniature furniture.
Portraits: Collection includes members of the Beekman family, George Clinton, Nathan Cobb, the Rev. John Knox and others.
Books on local and state history
Local Newspapers from 1875
Subject files on community institutions, people and events.
Photographs, postcards and other pictorial material.
Maps and atlases from local, county and Hudson Valley areas.
Manuscript collection including records of local school districts, local businesses and the Civil War rpapers of Captin Charles H. Rockwell.
We offer in house programs to visiting schools and also offer local history programs to the local school districts in their classrooms.
