Description

Housed in five 19th Century buildings, the Brick Store Museum was founded in 1936 to celebrate local history, art and culture in the Kennebunks and its surrounding communities in Southern Maine. It is open year-round with six galleries and rotating exhibitions.

Mission

The Brick Store Museum exists to ignite personal connections to local history, art and culture through exhibitions, education and programs celebrating the human experience in the Kennebunks and its surrounding communities.

History

Founded by American artist Edith Cleaves Barry (1884 - 1969) in 1936, the Brick Store Museum is housed in five 19th Century buildings on Main Street in Kennebunk. The museum's name comes from the first of those buildings, built in 1825 out of bricks as a dry goods store.

Artifact Collections

The Brick Store Museum is home to nearly 70,000 objects, including three dimensional pieces and archival materials.

Research Collections

The Archives Center at the Museum houses genealogical and town histories for research access by the public.

Dedicated rental space for local businesses

FACILITY RENTAL: The Brick Store Museum’s Program Center at 4 Dane Street, located just behind the Museum, began its life as a home in the 1850s. As the Museum grew, founder Edith Barry purchased the building to create the New Art Center Workshop; and later it became the program center that features collections storage, a small auditorium, dining space, and kitchen. The front of the building is dedicated rental space for local businesses.

The Program Center is used by the Museum for everyday educational programs and special events like lectures, concerts, and activities. It is also the home to Storm Warnings Repertory Theatre, bringing live theatre to the Kennebunks. The space also serves our community, as a place for meetings, art shows, rehearsals, celebrations, and more.

Are you a Business Partner?

Use of the Museum galleries for business-related receptions for VIPs, clients, and meetings is only available to Manufacturing and Mercantile Society Members of the Museum’s Business Partner Program. Our Business Partners also receive complimentary usage of the Program Center.
