Description

The William J. Marra Museum of Deaf History and Deaf Culture is housed in the building of the Deaf Cultural Center. The museum is filled with interactive displays, captioned videos and artifacts related to being Deaf in America. Included in the exhibits is a demonstration room, Living By the Eye, that showcases visual signaling devices; videos of signed "oral" histories from Deaf community members; and beautiful examples of De'VIA (Deaf View Image Art) by Deaf artists from across the country.

Mission

The Deaf Cultural Center?s mission is to provide educational and resourceful programs and activities to inspire a deeper appreciation and understanding of the lives of diverse deaf people, including their language, culture, experiences, achievements and contributions worldwide.

History

The museum first opened its doors to the public in the fall of 2005. Programs have been added since 2008 and continue to grow.

Artifact Collections

Historical photos, information and technology changes related to being Deaf in America. Artifacts collected from the Kansas School for the Deaf, more than 150 years in operation.

Educational Programs

The Hands on Workshop for children is a one hour program that includes American Sign Language Art, Storytelling and a mini sign language class. Cost is $5/child. Prior scheduling is required.

Educational Tour and Information Scavenger Hunt has been aligned with State Curriculum Standards. There is no cost for this program. Prior scheduling is requested.

Morning Mingles is a "coffee chat" in American Sign Language. This monthly event is held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month, 9:00 am - 11:00 am. Cost is $7 for coffee and breakfast treats. Local Deaf art work is highlighted. Event is not interpreted.

Monthly Patio Parties are held on the 3rd Thursday, 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm. Cost is $10 for beverages and light appetizers. A 30-min program related to artifacts from the museum is presented. Event is interpreted.

Various sign language classes are offered from infants to adults. Contact the Deaf Cultural Center for details.

Facilities

The one story 6,700 sq. ft. building is easily accessible. Two large rooms are filled with the museum. There are five smaller rooms - two offices, a gift shop, a library and a storage area. The lobby area includes art work. The outside area has a small patio and a beautiful memorial brick walkway.

Services

We are in the process of developing extended resource and referral information related to aspects of various hearing levels. Our brochure rack has local information about resources and local attractions.

About the Gift Shop

After you visit the Marra Museum, don’t forget to stop by our gift shop! Newly remodeled, it has many new and unique items related to the Museum, Deaf culture, and sign language, including sign language books, cups, pencils and pens with ASL sayings imprinted on them. Also, we have Christmas and gift cards relating to the DCC and the Kansas School for the Deaf. The Museum Gift Shop is managed by the Marra Volunteers and all proceeds go to the Deaf Cultural Center and the Marra Museum.
