The Museum houses an extensive natural history exhibit (over 200 native species represented) including 3 extinct species and unusual individual animals. Also on-site is a live birds of prey exhibit, native reptiles, fish and an assortment of other New England focused displays. Adjacent to the Hogback Mountain Conservation Area, museum visitors have easy access to over 600 protected acres of trails and views of three States.
The Southern Vermont Natural History Museum was founded in 1996 with the acquisition of the historic Luman R. Nelson Natural History Collection. Addition of Live birds of prey in 1999 and the completion of new exhibit space in 2012 bookend a series of developments that have led the museum to grow into one of the "hidden gems" of southern Vermont.
