Description

Due to our relatively small personal collection, the Alleghany Historical Society relies heavily on the residents of the Alleghany Highlands to contribute to rotating exhibits. Donations relevant to our collection are always welcome! We also have traveling exhibts.

LoanPolicies: Depending on the length of the exhibit and articles in question, our loan procedures rather closely follow those of the National Park Service. Items that are relevant to an up-coming, or current exhibition are the most sought after.

Conservation: We are equipped to scan images brought to us or make copies at request, both digital and paper. Most conservation work has to be done by another entity. Conservation Services Are Availabile To Other Institutions.

Mission

Our mission is to preserve the history of the Alleghany Highlands and continue to educate the citizens about the history of our area.

History

The Alleghany Historical Society was formed June 26, 1958 with 231 charter members. The Society has continually been active in the Community since that time and resides in the restored 1908 C&O Covington Passenger Depot.

Artifact Collections

Our site provides a unique venue for area residents to exhibit their collections through rotating exhibits. Our own artifact collection is relatively small, although we are continuing to develop both our collection and our program.

Research Collections

An ever-growing archive containing information dating back to the founding of Alleghany County, Virginia in 1822. Our photographic database contains images or copies of images dating back to the 1850s.

Programs

We try to diversify our rotating exhibits as much as possible. One project under current development is a static exhibit on Alleghany County History that will draw from the Virginia Standards of Learning to help draw area students to the site.
