Description

The Red Bluff Recreation Area and the Sacramento River Discovery Center are the best kept secrets around. The 488 acre area is located on the banks of the Sacramento River by the Red Bluff Diversion Dam just south of Red Bluff, CA. Our mission is to promote stewardship of the Sacramento River watershed which has been identified as one of the 200 most diverse ecosystems in the world that must be preserved. We are housed in a temporary building, and are developing a capitol campaign to build a straw bale permanent building which contains all recycled materials to demonstrate our commitment to a sustainable future where our use of natural resources doesn't deny these resources for future generations. We have a two acre California native plant garden and promote the use of native plants to conserve water and restore native ecosystems. We have identified over 125 species of birds in the area and have a bird monitoring program and an extensive bird box program to provide nesting spots for birds who are losing their natural nesting places. The Area has been identified as a "Watchable Wildlife Site' due to the diversity of animals that can be viewed here. Over the years, we have planted forty acres of oak woodland, restored grasslands, created over five miles of trails, build a group campground and an overnight campground. The area is a quiet recreational area with boat ramps and day use picnic areas with spectacular views of Mount Shasta and Mount Lassen. The US Fish & Wildlife Service operates a Fish Viewing Plaza where one can view fish moving through fish ladders during four months of the year. Each year the Center hosts a Discovery Garden Festival & Ca Native Plant Sale, the first week in November, and a Sacramento River Watershed Celebration the third Saturday in May. We have developed an innovative High School Natural Resources Internship where students from the local high school spend two hours each school day to study the natural resources and learn about the watershed at the Center and on the grounds, create special research projects, partici pate in a restoration project like propagating and planting native plants, and serve as docents for visiting grade school children.
