Description

Historic Fort Steuben is a recreation of life on the Ohio frontier in the late 1700's when the young American government was planning to survey and sell newly acquired land: the Northwest Territory (which was to become Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin). The recruits were young and inexperienced; the supplies were limited; life was difficult. Only one of two fully reconstructed forts in Ohio on its original site, Historic Fort Steuben brings to life the harsh realities only hinted at in history textbooks. Further exhibits of pioneer and Native American life are found in the Exhibit Hall of the Visitor Center. When the fort is closed for the winter, seasonal exhibits on American history and culture are on display in the Exhibit Hall. Future plans include a permanent exhibit on the Native Americans of the region, the history of surveying, and frontier life of the early settlers. Located in downtown Steubenville, a visit to Historic Fort Steuben encompasses three centuries on one site. The adjacent Fort Steuben Park is the home of the Berkman Amphitheater where free summer concerts are held each year.
