The Arab American National Museum (AANM) is the first and only museum in the United States devoted to Arab American history and culture. The AANM is located in the heart of metro Detroit's Arab American community. Through its interactive hands-on exhibits, the AANM documents and presents the Arab American story. By bringing the voices and faces of Arab Americans to its audiences, the AANM affirms its commitment to dispel the many misconceptions about Arab Americans and other minorities. The museum brings to light the shared experiences of immigrants and ethnic groups, while paying tribute to the diversity of our nation.
The Arab American National Museum opened its doors on May 5, 2005. Prior to the opening of the museum, ACCESS had established a cultural arts department. The cultural arts department moved into the museum and expanded its outreach and mission.
The museum's collections include ancient Arab world artifacts and more modern Arab American artifacts. These include personal items, stories, artwork, and media.
The AANM's Library and Resource center has a collection of nearly 3,500 books, magazines, manuscripts, dvds, videos and other publications.
The Arab American National Museum provides cultural competency workshops, docent led tours, lectures, curriculum materials, gallery tours, and conferences.
The Arab American National Museum's parent organization is ACCESS, Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services. We also have a national advisory board.
