Built in 1858 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Evergreen House is a magnificent 48-room Italianate mansion on 26 wooded acres in Baltimore. Formerly the home of two generations of Baltimore's prominent Garrett family, Evergreen House and its collection of over 50,000 objects were bequeathed to the Johns Hopkins University in 1942 with the stipulation that the estate remain open to "lovers of music, art, and beautiful things." Since opening to the public in 1990, Evergreen House has surpassed mere historic preservation to creatively respond to the Garretts' legacy. Today, Evergreen operates as a dynamic house museum, contemporary art center, and performance space, offering artist residency programs, lectures, symposia, concerts, exhibitions, educational programs, plus tours of the museum.
Furniture, fine arts, rare books, Asian decorative arts, important early 20th-century paintings and sculpture, and one of the largest private collections of Tiffany glass.
Evergreen's Garrett Library contains 28,600 volumes, all of which are available to be used on-site. Patrons are required to call in advance to schedule a visit and to ensure that material they need is available. The collection is particularly strong in 16th- and 17th- century English literature; natural history; architectural history; voyage and exploration literature; and Bibles. The Garrett Library also includes the autographs of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and other American manuscripts, various maps dating from the 16th to the 20th centuries, children's literature of the 19th century, Civil War broadsides and pamphlets, and the papers and drawings of Baltimore architect, Laurence Hall Fowler (d. 1971).
Evergreen operates as a dynamic house museum, contemporary art center, and performance space, offering artist residency programs, lectures, symposia, concerts, exhibitions, educational programs, book signings, plus tours of the museum.

The Museum Shop at Evergreen Museum & Library offers a selection of gifts and books that reflect the history of Evergreen, the Garrett family, and their collections. Adaptations of Evergreen’s architectural motifs, blue and white ware, and paintings from the collections are reproduced in note cards, ornaments, prints, and other decorative items.
