Description

Our mission is to preserve the heritage of Meeteetse and its surrounding geographic area. We have on display the largest grizzley bear captured in the lower 48 states, black footed ferrets which were discovered on a local ranch after being declared extinct and the Charles Belden photography collection. We feature rotating exhibits on local history, events, people and maintain an archives for researchers studying the area.

History

We were established in 1975 by the members of the Big Horn Pioneer Association. We were give a local bank building which is now on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the three museums we own and operate. In 2003, Meeteetse Museums District was formed to permanently fund the museums from taxes.

Artifact Collections

We have an extensive collection of photographs taken by famous western photographer Charles J. Belden. Belden lived at Meeteetse's well-known Pitchfork Ranch for a time. His descendants still live at and manage the ranch today. We also house an exact replica of the darkroom Belden had at the 'big house' at the Pitchfork, as well as his cameras, Molesworth desk and chair and memorabilia.

Programs

Docent program, oral history programs, traveling programs, lectures, school programs.
