The Pollock Gallery is the exhibitoin space for the Division of ARt, Meadows School of the Arts, Southern Methodist University. AS such, it provides a unique place for the thoughtful and scholarly presentation and consideration of past and present artists and art forms. It is historically the proper vehicle for the study and examination of art within the educational framework of the university. Exhibitoins and related programs at the gallery provide the faculty fo the Division of Art, Division of Art History, faculty from other fields of university study as well as area public school teachers an arena for making connections crucial to the learning process.

The gallery organizes and curates four special exhibitions per year in its exhibition space located on campus in the Hughes-Trigg Student Center at 3140 Dyer Street. Additionally, the gallery hosts both the Master of Fine Arts Qualifying Exhibitions and the Bachelor of Fine Arts Qualifying Exhibition that occur in the spring of each academic school year. Throughout the school year the gallery sponsors an active program of public lectures by exhibiting artists and individuals noted in the arts both regionally and nationally. Exhibitions are frequently utilized by university faculty in conjunction with the courses they teach. A Friends of the Pollock Gallery support organization is being actively expanded with the hope of significant contributions in the area of programming and publications. Gallery publications have garnered much acclaim and respect in museum and academic circles, having received The Mitchell A. Wilder Award from the Texas Association of Museums in 1994, 1995 and 1997.

The primary goal of the Pollock Gallery is to involve the SMU Community as well as the surrounding regional audience in an interaction with a broad range of artistic visual inquiries concerned with the human conditon. These visual inquiries, wiethere they be drawings, paintings, photographs, prints, sculpture, or mixed media, should reflect the fundamental values of human life and art in relation to our shared past, present, and future while providing a challenging environment that encourages each visitor's intellectural, spiritual, social, cultural, moral, aesthetic, and emotional growth. It is the hope of the Pollock Gallery that both the artwork exhibited and the manner of exhibiting it will create opportunities for broadening each visitor's appreciation of the vastness and richness of the human experience. It is also the hope of the Pollock Gallery that the exhibitions will help students and non-students alike to consider a myriad of images, beliefs, feelings, traditions, and rituals against the backdrop of their own lives and preceptions and by doing so foster a recognition and appreciation of both individual and cultural diversity, thereby continuing the goals of enrichment and enlightenment that have traditionally been the hallmarks of academic galleries.
