The Laurel Museum collects, preserves and displays objects, photographs, and archival material related to Laurel, Maryland. It is our intention to educate both local and non-local visitors about the history of the town of Laurel and the people, institutions and outside forces that formed the town.
The Laurel Historical Society, Inc. was founded in the 1970s for the purpose of collecting, preserving and displaying artifacts related to Laurel. Before the Museum was opened in 1996, the Society presented educational programs (as we still do) to educate the public about the history of the formation of Laurel.
The Laurel Museum Collection is made up of many photographs, personal and business records, personal items, textiles, books, architectural details. We have items related to the Laurel Mill, the residents of Laurel, school children, local soldiers, Main Street businesses, women's lives in Laurel, and much more.
The John C. Brennan Library contains a number of books related to Laurel, Prince George's County and Maryland history. We also have an extensive collection of vertical files in the library, containing photographs, letters, personal histories, newspaper clippings, and other ephermera related to Laurel.
Kids tours, with a visit to the site of the dam that powered the Laurel Mill (now demolished), crafts.
A fall and spring series of lectures on topics related to Laurel.
Backyard tours - tours of local sites that local residents might not have visted before (in local counties, Washington, DC, or Northern Virginia).
