The Society of the Cincinnati - Anderson House

History

The Society of the Cincinnati was founded in 1783 by officers of the Continental army and navy to promote the achievement of American independence. The Society acquired Anderson House in 1938 as a gift from Isabel Anderson, whose husband, Larz Anderson, had been a devoted member of the Society. The Society opened Anderson House as a historic house museum in 1939. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and made a National Historic Landmark in 1996.

Artifact Collections

3,500 artifacts related to the Revolutionary War, the Society of the Cincinnati, and Anderson House and its occupants. The museum collections include armaments, ceramics, coins and medals, fine arts, furniture, glass and crystal, personal artifacts, silver and other metals, and textiles. The bulk of the artifacts related to Anderson House are the collection of fine and decorative arts amassed by Larz and Isabel Anderson to furnish Anderson House.

Research Collections

The Society of the Cincinnati's library contains rare books, manuscripts, maps, prints and other graphic arts on paper, and photographs as well as a collection of modern books and other reference materials related to the Revolutionary War period, the Society of the Cincinnati and its members, the art of war in the 18th century, Anderson House, and the Anderson family.
