The Alumni Association has acted as historians for the College, working to preserve the history of the buildings occupied by the college and the relationship of those edifices to the community. The Alumni’s museum, established in 1985, has preserved and maintained a large collection of B&O memorabilia and one-thousand pieces of Hazel Atlas Glass. In an effort to reflect the local history of the New Martinsville Campus, the Alumni also has a display of original Viking Glass on that campus that was donated by Mrs. Homer Hoskins, Jr.
The Museum’s three collections are:
B&O Memorabilia – approximately 5,000 cataloged items
Hazel Atlas Glass – 1,000 pieces of glassware
Viking Glass – 36 items – on display on New Martinsville campus
In addition, the Alumni working with local residents of African-American descent have, for the past five years, organized programs and exhibits to reflect Black History Month each February. In the process, the Museum Committee has accumulated a significant collection of materials reflecting that subject including local history of the Black Community prior to desegregation.
Of special note: For the past fifteen years, board members have received training in methods for preservation and maintenance of collections, cataloging and exhibit techniques and standards for museum operation thorough the organization’s membership in the West Virginia Association of Museums. The Museum Committee continues to organize exhibits throughout the year to further community awareness of local history.
