Historical Society of Ocean Grove
Ocean Grove, New Jersey
Description

Each year the HSOG offers a multitude of exhibitions, events, tours, and educational programs to residents and visitors, peaking in the summer months. We offer a permanent exhibition, History of Ocean Grove, and three special exhibitions every year, each on an interesting aspect of Ocean Grove culture or history. Our Exhibitions, Events, and Education sections describe them all! Our Museum is filled with an extensive collection of artifacts from Ocean Grove’s history, and we’ve highlighted a number of important pieces in the Collection section. Don’t forget to save some time for our Museum Store when you visit.

In addition to the Museum, Centennial Cottage and Garden, the Beersheba Well, the Fitzgerald Fountain, and several historic urns around town provide fascinating glimpses of how people lived, what was important to them, and the culture of the time in a Victorican shore community at the turn of the 19th century.

From the casual researcher to the academic scholar, we offer an extensive Archives and an onsite and online Research Library. There are many ways to become involved with the HSOG whether you are an individual, a company, or a government or nonprofit organization. You can volunteer a little or a lot, join one of our membership programs, and we always appreciate donations.

Mission

Since its founding in 1969, the Historical Society of Ocean Grove has pledged to preserve, document, and encourage community interest in Ocean Grove.

The purpose of this nonprofit Society is to sustain the heritage and honor of being designated a State and National Historic District.

The Historical Society aims to:

1. Advocate for the protection of Ocean Grove’s historic structures, material culture, and built environment.
2. Maintain Ocean Grove as the largest assemblage of authentic Victorian architecture in the nation, and its establishment as a 19th century planned resort community.
3. Enrich the Camp Meeting heritage of Ocean Grove and the town’s unique heritage.

History

The HSOG’s permanent exhibition, History of Ocean Grove, highlights the fascinating historical, cultural, and architectural aspects of Ocean Grove. Be sure to visit this permanent display.

Artifact Collections

Protecting and preserving our collection for future generations is one of our greatest responsibilities. The Museum has more than 15,000 objects, cultural materials, artifacts, and pieces relative to the history of Ocean Grove, Monmouth County, and 19th century shore life.

Programs

We would like our education and social impact programs to connect thousands of young people and their families, including students, community members, aspiring historians, and educators. Our goal is to offer enriching history experiences, nurture critical thinking at all levels, and harness the power of history to make meaningful differences in people’s live.

2025 American Alliance of Museums (AAM) ANNUAL MEETING & MUSEUMEXPO

Los Angeles Convention Center

Los Angeles, California

AAM 2025 will focus on the theme, Museums & Trust.

Museums have long inspired high levels of public trust, surpassing news outlets, government organizations, researchers and scientists, corporations, and social media platforms. This consistent finding underscores our institutions’ unique position in society as stewards of knowledge, culture, science, and history—areas where credibility and reliability are paramount

In an era marked by mistrust and misinformation, museums have a rare ability to counterbalance the proliferation of false narratives and polarized perspectives. Using our trusted position, we can cultivate a more healthy, empathetic, and informed society.

But to do so, we must maintain our credibility proactively, embracing thoughtful, transparent, and collaborative practices that will defend against influences like bias, resource challenges, abuse of power, and social injustice

An Incredible MuseumExpo

AAM is again partnering this year with the Museum Store Association to host an incredible combined expo hall. Find the most innovative services, products, and solutions in the museum field. With 350 exhibitors, you are bound to find the right partner for your museum’s current challenges and opportunities.

2025 Am Assoc for State and Local History Annual Conference

TBD

Cincinnati, Ohio

The 2025 AASLH Annual Conference, in partnership with Ohio Local History Alliance, will take place as the history field makes the final preparations to kickoff off the 250th commemoration of the founding of the United States.

The 2025 conference theme, inspired by AASLH’s Making History at 250: The Field Guide for Semiquincentennial, is an opportunity to broadly explore one of the guide’s themes, The American Experiment. For many in the American colonies in 1776, independence from Britain represented a “leap into the dark” into an unknown future

We are excited for you to join us in Cincinnati as we encourage discussion about our democracy and civic institutions and how they can help strengthen understanding, inspire action, and reveal ways that all of us can participate in and shape the ongoing American experiment.

For more information, please call 615-320-3203 or email info@aaslh.org.
