Description

Located in the historic James G. Hanes (Hanes Corporation founder), SECCA is an art gallery designed to involve people in the art and craft of our time. Major exhibitions recently have included Dutch photographer Erwin Olaf and contemporary quilts by seven world class quilt artists. The museum is located on 32 lush acres still intact in a residential neighborhood. Admission is now free to enable more people access to the art and vision of the institution. SECCA seeks to involve people by creating a laboratory for creative thinking and discussion.

History

Founded in 1956 as a non-profit arts organization prompting regional art and artists. By 1972, when James G. Hanes willed SECCA his estate, the gallery included art from all 11 Southern states. The mansion was renovated and a 8,896 foot gallery was added. Another gallery was added in 1990. In 2007, the state of North Carolina took over SECCA to assist with much needed renovations. A major renovation project will be undertaken in 2009 -- the gallery will be closed at the time, but SECCA will remain active by providing public art, discussion and forums.
