Virginia War Memorial
Richmond, Virginia
Description

The memorial lists the names of Virginians who made the supreme sacrifice and all of those who served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Persian Gulf.

History

The Virginia War Memorial was originally conceived as a Memorial to honor Virginia's veterans of World War II. The first funds to plan and build the Memorial were appropriated by the Virginia General Assembly Session of 1950. Before planning was completed, North Korea invaded South Korea and the United States was once again embroiled in a major war. Construction plans for the Memorial were put on hold until after the cease-fire in July 1953. At that time, the intent of the Memorial was changed to honor both the veterans of World War II and Korea with the names of those Virginians who had died in battle being placed on the soaring glass and stone walls of the Shrine of Memory. Construction started in 1954 and the Memorial was dedicated in February 1956.
