History

In 1935, the museum was first opened as a Federal Art Project under the Roosevelt administration, and the first organized by a woman’s club. The building was located in the Old Clerk’s Office on the grounds of the courthouse. The museum closed in 1942 due to World War II and did not re-open until 1974 in anticipation of the nation’s bicentennial.
