MacCallum More Museum and Gardens
Chase City, Virginia
Description

The gardens consist of a 5-acre organically maintained arboretum, herb, wildflower, and rose gardens, imported fountains and statuary. The museum houses an extensive permanent Native American artifact exhibit and rotating art shows.

Mission

Our mission is to be a premier cultural center for Southern Virginia providing our members and visitors events and displays that are rich in educational, horticultural, historical and artisitic value.

History

The museum, opened in April 1996, houses a permanent exhibit of Indian artifacts collected locally by Mr. Arthur Robertson of Chase City. Tools and weapons dating from 9500 BC to 1600 AD, give a clear picture of the lifestyles and cultures of the seven periods of Native Americans. An exhibit on Thyne Institute, a boarding school established in 1876 for the education of the black children of the area and an exhibit on The Mecklenburg Hotel, an early 1900s marvel that was based on the mineral water springs of the area round out the exhibits. Local items of interest are also on display in the museum.

Artifact Collections

Arthur Robertson Native American collection spans a period from 9500 BC to 1600 AD. The largest portion of the exhibit was found in the Mecklenburg County, VA area.

Programs

Docent program, school tours, preschool day in gardens, garden lectures for adults, summer garden classes for youth, Native American Day for Fifth grade students.
