History

The site of the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden was at one time an Indian hunting ground, a recreation center, a children's hospital, and a residence. The Garden is named for Lewis Ginter, a prominent Richmond businessman who owned the property during the late 1800s. His niece Grace Arents, an avid gardener, bought the property after Ginter's death. Arents' will stipulated the foundation of a botanical garden in her uncle's honor. This wish was realized in 1984 with the foundation of Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden.
