Amazement Square, The Rightmire Children's Museum
Lynchburg, Virginia
Description

At Amazement Square, Central Virginia's first multidisciplinary, hands-on children's museum, we believe that play is one of the most important ways children learn and grow! Climb, slide, and discover as you make your way through four floors of exciting, interactive exhibits, activities, and programs that explore global and regional topics, arts and humanities, and science and health-related themes. To allow people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities to take advantage of the museum's unique learning opportunities, Amazement Square provides a variety of outreach events and offers a Sponsored Admission Program for undeserved youth to experience the museum at a free or reduced rate.

Mission

Amazement Square is dedicated to motivating children and adults of all backgrounds and abilities toward greater creativity and understanding of themselves and the world through hands-on learning. The museum's exhibits and educational programs encourage all participants to explore the arts and humanities, culture, science, technology and their interdisciplinary relationships. – Approved by the Board of Directors, 1998.

History

The idea of creating a children’s museum in Lynchburg began in 1992 as a project of the Junior League of Lynchburg. The idea became a reality through a three year process of extensive research, forming a volunteer board of directors, establishing Amazement Square as a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit educational organization, and finding a home for the museum.

After nine years of research, planning, and renovating, Amazement Square opened its doors on March 24, 2001 as Central Virginia’s first multidisciplinary, hands-on children’s museum, housing eight educational exhibitions exploring themes such as architectural appreciation, visual and performing arts, health awareness, science, cultural understanding and regional history.
