History

We are a very small house museum located in a very small town. Our projects include more tourism which is increasing. Our major headache is space. We need more space for our artifacts, more storage, and a larger gift shop. Of course, the main problem is financial.

History, Historical Society

The grandiose building that sits at the south end of Trinity Street in Decatur is deceptively quiet. Once the home of Decatur Baptist College, it is now the Wise County Heritage Museum owned by the Wise County Historical Society, Inc.
Today the museum is alive with the activity of preserving Wise County's past. The museum is the headquarters for the Wise County Historical Commission and the Wise County Historical Society, Inc. Together they educate citizens about the past through presentations and through the museum, which is kept in operation by donations, admissions, sales from the gift shop and various fund-raising events through the year. Members attend conferences and work to keep the archives updated.

Art, History

Our museum has been described as the best small museum for our population base; run by a group of ladies that enjoy creating history out of their past. We have completed the restoration of an ecilpse windmill for our front lawn and enjoyed working with a group of retired gentlemen in Spearman whose association restores windmills for various groups. We also have a mural in one of our nearby towns that we are seeking grants for its restoration. Every two months we have an exhibit for an area artist of any media, paintings, quilts, photography, woodwork, etc. Also the county students have an annual exhibit. Our main goal at this time is to enlarge our facility with the addition of an adjacent building for equipment , cars, etc.

The museum is conveniently located just minutes off Interstate 20 at 210 Loop 170 in Sweetwater, Texas. Pilots flying over Sweetwater can land at Avenger Field - the Sweetwater Airport (SWW). White Settlement Historical Museum

We have erected a windmill and have acquired a historic log cabin, built in 1864. We have constructed a replica of a well and have provided a typical outhouse. Frances Colwell has published a booklet detailing the history of the cabin complete with many old photographs.

Mrs. Colwell has collected information and is preparing another historical book on the Thompson Cemetery. This cemetery was restored by the White Settlement Historical Society after decades of neglect and valdalism. The Judd Street Cemetery was also restored.

We hope to instill in the minds of the children in our area the importance of maintaining community history. We do this by encouraging school class visits and by taking our exhibits to school classes.

In addition to the display of our natural collections, we hope to develop interpretive displays inside our building and along out trails. 2025 American Alliance of Museums (AAM) ANNUAL MEETING & MUSEUMEXPO

Los Angeles Convention Center

Los Angeles, California

AAM 2025 will focus on the theme, Museums & Trust.

Museums have long inspired high levels of public trust, surpassing news outlets, government organizations, researchers and scientists, corporations, and social media platforms. This consistent finding underscores our institutions’ unique position in society as stewards of knowledge, culture, science, and history—areas where credibility and reliability are paramount

In an era marked by mistrust and misinformation, museums have a rare ability to counterbalance the proliferation of false narratives and polarized perspectives. Using our trusted position, we can cultivate a more healthy, empathetic, and informed society.

But to do so, we must maintain our credibility proactively, embracing thoughtful, transparent, and collaborative practices that will defend against influences like bias, resource challenges, abuse of power, and social injustice

An Incredible MuseumExpo

AAM is again partnering this year with the Museum Store Association to host an incredible combined expo hall. Find the most innovative services, products, and solutions in the museum field. With 350 exhibitors, you are bound to find the right partner for your museum’s current challenges and opportunities.

2025 Am Assoc for State and Local History Annual Conference

TBD

Cincinnati, Ohio

The 2025 AASLH Annual Conference, in partnership with Ohio Local History Alliance, will take place as the history field makes the final preparations to kickoff off the 250th commemoration of the founding of the United States.

The 2025 conference theme, inspired by AASLH’s Making History at 250: The Field Guide for Semiquincentennial, is an opportunity to broadly explore one of the guide’s themes, The American Experiment. For many in the American colonies in 1776, independence from Britain represented a “leap into the dark” into an unknown future

We are excited for you to join us in Cincinnati as we encourage discussion about our democracy and civic institutions and how they can help strengthen understanding, inspire action, and reveal ways that all of us can participate in and shape the ongoing American experiment.

For more information, please call 615-320-3203 or email info@aaslh.org.
