Smyth County Historical Society & Museum has acquired an impressive collection from prehistoric to the modern era; Two collections of special significance. The first is the Southwestern State Hospital Collection of artifacts and photographs from 1887 through the 1950's and a collection of period clothing and textiles from 1808-1965. The Museum offers an interesting "tour through time" that reflects the economic and social development of the county and, in general, rural Southwest Virginia. There are also special exhibits highlight unique periods of the County's heritage and offer insights into what life was like. .

For over 14 years the Suffolk Museum has brought to the citizens of Suffolk a well-rounded group of exhibits, visual art classes, performing artists and almost anything else that can fit into the “art” category. The museum is also home to the Suffolk Art League, founded in 1976, which provides additional programming opportunities for Suffolk citizens. The museum hosts a variety of changing exhibitions showing the work of local and regional artists, and offers hands-on workshop classes and performing arts events. It is the home of the Suffolk Art League.
