Layland Museum

Cleburne, Texas

Children's, History, Historic House

The Layland is a medium-sized museum in a beautiful structure in the heart of downtown Cleburne. There is great local affection for the building as being the "old" library where many residents enjoyed time there. It's a grand legacy. Exhibits discuss everyday life and visitors relate well to photographs of children with pets, women in hats, and men posing with fishes. It is an easy museum to wander through. Though small in exhibit space the Layland hopes to present a significant cultural program experience. Greater public programming is the immediate goal. Concerts in the park and a major traveling exhibit from New York State Museum, "RECOVERY: The World Trade Center Recovery Operation," will occupy summer of 2004.

History

Welcome to the Hardmeyer-York House. This house was built in 1874 by a carpenter and his two stepsons.

In those days, it was not easy to build a lovely home like this. For instance, the wide cypress flooring you see here was obtained by taking a wagon pulled by a team of oxen all the way to Louisiana. The fancy woodwork and trim that had to be all done by hand. There were no power tools in those days.

Of course, they had no electricity, running water, or gas, but they were very ingenious and resourceful. For instance, the transoms over the front, back, and inside doors allow air circulation when open thereby keeping them cool.

For heat, there is a fireplace in each room with every two fireplaces sharing a common chimney.

Log Cabin Village

Fort Worth, Texas

History, Historic House, Specialized

In the 1950s, nineteenth century log structures were quickly vanishing from the North Texas landscape. In order to preserve them and the history of pioneer settlement in North Texas, a group of residents formed the Pioneer Texas Heritage Committee. This committee selected and acquired six log structures of varying architectural styles with the vision of creating a "log cabin village." With the help of Fort Worth's Parks Department, a wooded spot near the Trinity River in Forest Park was selected as the site for this village. However, after all the cabins were moved there, the committee encountered many problems. There was not enough money or support to restore and furnish the structures. Many council members and residents even opposed the project.

2025 American Alliance of Museums (AAM) ANNUAL MEETING & MUSEUMEXPO

Los Angeles Convention Center

Los Angeles, California

AAM 2025 will focus on the theme, Museums & Trust.

Museums have long inspired high levels of public trust, surpassing news outlets, government organizations, researchers and scientists, corporations, and social media platforms. This consistent finding underscores our institutions’ unique position in society as stewards of knowledge, culture, science, and history—areas where credibility and reliability are paramount

In an era marked by mistrust and misinformation, museums have a rare ability to counterbalance the proliferation of false narratives and polarized perspectives. Using our trusted position, we can cultivate a more healthy, empathetic, and informed society.

But to do so, we must maintain our credibility proactively, embracing thoughtful, transparent, and collaborative practices that will defend against influences like bias, resource challenges, abuse of power, and social injustice

An Incredible MuseumExpo

AAM is again partnering this year with the Museum Store Association to host an incredible combined expo hall. Find the most innovative services, products, and solutions in the museum field. 2025 Am Assoc for State and Local History Annual Conference

TBD

Cincinnati, Ohio

The 2025 AASLH Annual Conference, in partnership with Ohio Local History Alliance, will take place as the history field makes the final preparations to kickoff off the 250th commemoration of the founding of the United States.

The 2025 conference theme, inspired by AASLH’s Making History at 250: The Field Guide for Semiquincentennial, is an opportunity to broadly explore one of the guide’s themes, The American Experiment. For many in the American colonies in 1776, independence from Britain represented a “leap into the dark” into an unknown future

We are excited for you to join us in Cincinnati as we encourage discussion about our democracy and civic institutions and how they can help strengthen understanding, inspire action, and reveal ways that all of us can participate in and shape the ongoing American experiment.

For more information, please call 615-320-3203 or email info@aaslh.org.
