We preserve and interpret the 1.5 million years of history of the area, from the explosion of a volcano that shaped our landscape to the explosion of the atomic bomb made in our town that shaped the world both militarily and scientifically. We plan to administer the historic home of Manhattan Project Scientific Director, J. Robert Oppenheimer and open a newly-restored homesteading cabin on our grounds.

Pioneer Store Museum
Chloride, New Mexico

Archaeology, History, Historic House, Natural History

The Pioneer Store Museum consists of an 1880 Silver Boom Town mercantile. It was closed in rhe early 1920s, and was sealed up with lumber and tin over all of the windows and doors. It stood that way, unmolested, for nearly 70 years. When opened, the merchandise, including food stuff, was still on the shelves. It is the intent of the owners to preserve the 'store' as it was found for the benefit of the public.

Belen Harvey House Museum
Belen, New Mexico

Culture, History, Historic House

The Santa Fe railroad arrived in Belen in 1880, when Belen was just a small farming community. For the next 25 years, there was little train traffic through Belen, because the main rail line went west from Albuquerque. But in 1908 the railroad opened a new line that avoided the steep grades over Raton Pass. This new line was the Belen cut-off, and it routed many more trains through Belen. Belen began to bustle.

El Rancho de las Golondrinas is a living history museum located on 200 acres in a rural farming valley just south of Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Museum, dedicated to the history, heritage and culture of 18th and 19th century New Mexico, opened in 1972. Original colonial buildings on the site date from the early 1700s. In addition, historic buildings from other parts of northern New Mexico have been reconstructed at Las Golondrinas. Villagers clothed in the styles of the times show how life was lived on the frontier in early New Mexico. Special festivals and weekend events offer visitors an in-depth look into the celebrations, music, dance and many other aspects of life in the Spanish, Mexican and Territorial periods of the Southwest.
