Forts Folle Avoine Historic Park

200 years ago the North West Company and the XY Company built fur trade posts along the banks of the Yellow River. Today those fur trade companies are on center stage at Forts Folle Avoine Historical Park.

First discovered in a state archeological dig in 1969, the site is now on the National Register of Historic Sites. The fur trade site includes four reconstructed 1802-1804 trade houses on the site where they originally were located. Traditionally dressed interpreters provide living history tours. The site also includes a representative Woodland Indian Village.

Kilbourntown House

Kilbourntown House was built in 1844 by Benjamin Church, a carpenter from New York. Church, his wife and 6 children lived in the house, which was originally located in the section of Milwaukee known as Kilbourntown. An excellent example of Greek Revival architecture, the house was saved from destruction in 1938 when it was moved to Estabrook Park and restored as a WPA project. The home contains an outstanding collection of mid-nineteenth century furniture and decorative arts. The home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is available for tour by school groups.

The year 2010 will offer visitors dynamic special exhibits and activities for kids and adults. Our summer exhibit, “Adventure Dinosaur!” will feature a prehistoric park, with more than 25 dinosaurs – lurking, moving and rumbling in their tropical outdoor habitat. The exhibit runs May 29 – September 6, and is $2.50 per person after regular Zoo admission.

The Burnett County Historical Society is located at Forts Folle Avoine Historical Park - an 80 acre site with an authentic, restored 1802-1804 Fur Post and a Woodland Indian Village. The Society manages the Historic Site as well as a History Library, restored 1800 school house and soon a logging museum.

Jeremiah Curtin House

The Curtin House was built in 1846, the first stone house in the old Town of Greenfield. David Curtin, an Irish immigrant, built the house with the help of an Irish stone mason using stone from the quary north of Grange Ave. The Curtin House is a physical reminder of Milwaukee County's early Irish settlement and is also the boyhood home of Jeremiah Curtin, an accomplished linguist, author and world traveler. The Curtin house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Located in the historic Second Ward Savings Bank (built in 1913), the Milwaukee County Historical Society provides visitors with a glimpse at unique architecture and rotating exhibitions. The exhibits explore Milwaukee County's past, the achievemtns of its people and the community's ties to the state and nation.

In addition, the Historical Society regularly hosts nationally acclaimed traveling exhibitions from such organizations as the Gilder Lehrman Institute and the Smithsonian Institution.

The Historical Society also boasts an extensive research library, which houses naturalization papers and government records, photographs, maps, letters, personal documents and diaries.

The Paine is a historic estate that serves as a multi-faceted museum for learning and inspiration.
The museum preserves the mansion, surrounding architectural structures, and many of the interiors as they were created by founders Nathan and Jessie Kimberly Paine.
Selections from the museum’s art collection, much of which was acquired by Nathan and Jessie, are featured in the many rooms and settings of the estate.
Outdoors, the Paine maintains and enhances numerous display gardens as “galleries” of horticulture with varied designs and thousands of plant specimens.
In addition, the museum presents a wide variety of changing art exhibitions, from historical to contemporary, within the estate’s galleries and gardens.

Point of Beginnings Heritage Area

Much of Wisconsin's history can be traced to the southwestern corner of the state -- our "Point of Beginnings." The lead miners of the 1820s were among the first European settlers of Wisconsin. The state's 1831 land survey began from a benchmark location near Hazel Green. The first territorial government met at Belmont in 1836. As a measure of the area's rich history, four State Historic Sites (Pendarvis, Stonefield Village, First Capitol and Villa Louis) are located here. Richfield Historical Society

The buildings in the Richfield Historical Park consist of a 1870s grist mill, 1860s farm house with outbuildings, log cabin, log barn, and timber frame granary.

Trimborn Farm

View authentic 19th century farm life and peek inside a lime kiln to discover how limestone was converted to a commercial and agriculture chemical. Listed on the National Regiser of Historic Places and designated a State Historic Site and a Milwaukee County Landmark, Trimborn Farm is unique - a Civil War farmstead in the midst of a major metropolitan area.
The only Milwaukee County Park devoted to a historic theme, Trimborn Farm boasts nine period buildings including one of the largest stone barns still standing in Wisconsin, a granary constructed using the German method of "nogging," and four kilns used for over 50 years.
Trimborn Farm is open to school groups by appointment.
