For over a century, from the first flights by frail biplanes on the Hempstead Plains, to man’s walking on the Moon, Long Island has been on the leading edge of America’s aviation and space adventure. Long Islanders have helped transform aviation from a spectator sport to a major means of commercial transportation. We have also produced a large portion of America’s aerial arsenal in time of war. The many historic flights that transpired here, and the many aviation companies that developed here, helped make aviation the integral part of our world that it is today. Located on a 500-acre farm, the Penfield Homestead Museum exhibits objects from daily life in the mid-1800s. A pond-side walking tour will carry you by the ruins of a nineteenth-century iron town and the Congregational Church where its workers and their families worshipped.

We are a regional historical records repository, housing genealogical files, maps, church records, and business records of the Crown Point Iron Company. We are located in the hamlet of Ironville, the "Birthplace of the Electrical Age," where the electromagnet was used in the first-ever industrial application of electricity.

The American Merchant Museum serves as a repository for the USMMA's extensive and valuable collection of marine art, ship models and nautical artifacts. THE WARNER HOUSE The lovely old house on Constitution Island was the home of the Warner family from 1836 to 1915. Susan and Anna Warner were well-known writers in the Nineteenth Century. Susan wrote The Wide, Wide World in 1850, which became a bestseller of its day. Anna is best known for writing the words to the hymn "Jesus Loves Me." The sisters taught Bible classes to West Point cadets for 40 years. The oldest part of the Warner House includes a thick stone wall existing from Revolutionary War days. The Victorian wing of eight rooms was built by Henry Warner in 1836 when he moved his family from New York City to the island. The house is furnished with the original Warner family possessions.

New Windsor Cantonment breathes life into the onetime Continental Army post housing 7,500 soldiers and 500 women and children civilian war refugees. A small but talented staff authentically dressed and equipped as soldiers or soldiers' wives demonstrate the work and pastimes of life in a military community from weapons drill, woodworking, blacksmithing, medicine, cooking and laundry to celebrations and funerals, sports and games, and aspects of ordinary life in extraordinary times 60 miles above British-controlled New York City at the close of the Revolutionary War. Two new galleries introduce guests to the forgotten people behind the famous figures, and to a lost historic site nearby where the seeds of victory at the Siege of Yorktown were planted through intensive training.

As a department of the United States Military Academy, the Museum supports cadet academic, military and cultural instruction. Its collections include nearly all aspects of military history and encompass the history of West Point and the United States Military Academy, the evolution of warfare, and the development of the American Armed Forces. While only a portion of the collection is on display, all artifacts are available for cadet academic instruction, special exhibition and research.
