Fendall Hall
Eufaula, Alabama

Botanical Garden, History, Historic House, Historical Society, Park

Fendall Hall is one of Alabama’s outstanding Italianate houses and contains elaborate and rare interior decorative painting dating from the 1880s. Completed in 1860 by Edward and Anna Young, it was home to five generations of the Young family. It was purchased by the Alabama Historical Commission (AHC) in 1973 for preservation as a house museum, and it is now open to the public. It is restored and interpreted to the 1880-1916 occupancy of the home. Among its many treasures are family and period furnishings, marble mantles, and a black and white marble tiled entry. The five-acre site includes gardens and archaeological features.

Fort Payne Depot Museum
Fort Payne, Alabama

Culture, General, History, Historic House, Historical Society

The mission of the Fort Payne Depot Museum is summarized as: to collect, preserve and, through exhibits, educate the public about the history of the DeKalb County area. The museum staff and the Board of Directors understand the mission of the Museum, and there does not appear to be pressure to expand the scope of the collections to areas outside of the stated mission. The collections do, for the most part, support the mission. The collections fall into three broad categories: local history artifacts, including the railroad caboose, Native American artifacts, and special-interest collections.

Prattaugan Museum - Autauga County Heritage Center
Prattville, Alabama

Culture, General, History, Historic House, Historical Society, Military

The Heritage Association was born out of a sense of collective guilt some time after the Daniel Pratt mansion was leveled. After more than a decade of regret at having lost forever one of our most treasured of historic homes, the Prattville Study Club, then a group of 50 women, initiated the establishment of a county historical society. In 1976, our nation’s bi-centennial year, the Autauga County Heritage Association’s first president, Evelyn Striplin, was elected from among the 309 charter members of the association.

Old Monroe County Courthouse Museum
Monroeville, Alabama

General, History, Historic House, Historical Society, Park

Restored to its 1930s appearance, our courtroom is the model for Harper Lee’s fictional courtroom settings in To Kill a Mockingbird. It’s now one of the most recognized courtrooms in America because of the popular film version of the book. Although the movie was not filmed here, the set designer came to Monroeville to measure, photograph and draw the courtroom before recreating it on a Hollywood sound stage. Today, fans of the classic novel come to the courthouse from all over the world because it is the most tangible connection to the book’s fictional Maycomb. Visitors are free to move throughout the courtroom, including the balcony, witness chair, judge’s bench and tables used by the prosecutor and defense attorney.
