The mission of the Society is:

  • To promote an understanding of the role people of African descent have played in world history.
  • To collect a library of material depicting and recording the contributions made by people of African descent to world history and culture.
  • To make available the Society’s materials and knowledge concerning people of African descent to all who may benefit by such information.
  • To establish and maintain an African American cultural center in San Francisco.

SOMArts is a critical resource for contemporary arts production in San Francisco. The organization produces three of its own curated exhibitions annually, along with numerous collaborative programs, and provides space for four guest-curated exhibitions annually through the Commons Curatorial Residency Program, which includes a stipend for selected curators and/or artist groups in addition to outreach and production support. The vaulted, 2-story gallery is 3,100 sq feet, a majestic space and the largest open gallery space in the city.

SF African American Historical & Cultural Society presents selected exhibits on African and/or African American artists and supports the expression of black culture through the visual arts.
The African American Historical & Cultural Society operates the museum and gift shop at Fort Mason and the library and archives at the Center for African and African American Art and Culture.
