The Camp Roberts Historical Museum
Camp Roberts, California

Culture, General, History, Library, Military, Specialized

The Camp Roberts Historical Museum does not drift into the mainstream of museums, with every exhibit locked away behind glass. Instead, the visitor drifts among the epochs of the camp's enormous history, in an intimate association with the subject. Even the buildings and surroundings are kept primitive to some noticeable extent in order to imbue in the visitor a sense of the historic. It is experiential. It's not a product. It's not a showcase. It's a virtual fairground of important soldier history. And important visitors from the world over have commented that it is one of the most fascinating, well-designed, informative and interesting museum in the nation.

The Altaville School
Angels Camp, California

Cemetery, Children's, History, Historic House, Historical Society

The Altaville Schoolhouse, located in the settlement of that name in Calaveras County, California, is one of the best preserved of the proverbial one-room little red schoolhouses in California. Built of brick in 1858 and actively used until 1950, the little school witnessed the instruction of hundreds of children from the Mother Lode region. When it was closed the building began to deteriorate, but by good fortune it was located on property which became the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Altaville Fire Station. Through the efforts of CAL FIRE the building was identified as an important historical structure worthy of preservation.

The Bear Flag Museum is a nonprofit, virtual museum/library dedicated to collecting at one location all information about the California Bear Flag. Our hope is for the Bear Flag Museum to continue developing into a premier site for all information, art, images, textual materials, articles, links related to the California Bear Flag. Beyond growing the website's information and images, we hope to become a center for continuing research and writing related to the history of the California Bear Flag since 1846. We hope to become a significant resource for schools and teachers in the education of California students. Ultimately, we hope to create a physical museum for the California Bear Flag. The Bear Flag Museum was developed in the Fall 2006 and originally came online in January 2007.

The Clark Center for Japanese Art and Culture
Hanford, California

Art, Culture

Through a significant gift of Japanese paintings from the Clarks, the Clark Center's collection was established in October of 1995. Nearly one hundred and sixty hanging scrolls, thirty pairs or single screens, ten works of sculpture mainly from the Kamakura period (1185-1333), and a number of pieces of decorative art primarily from the Meiji period (1868-1912) are housed at the Center. The gallery spaces allow for approximately ten percent of the collection to be on display at one time. Among the highlights of the collection are exquisite Buddhist sculpture and painting from the Kamakura period, a wide range of paintings from the Edo period (1615-1868), and a selection of folding screens of the finest quality.
